HUFF ROAD OVER PINE CREEK-MANISTEE COUNTY

The existing single lane bridge structure, constructed in 1940, was inadequate to carry the load and traffic volume desired by the Manistee County Road Commission. Nordlund & Associates, Inc. was selected by the Road Commission to design and supervise the construction of a new bridge structure, meeting the Michigan Department of Transportation requirements. The proposed structure needed to meet the transportation requirements as well as, blend into the natural environment of the beautiful Pine Creek area. Pine Creek is a gravel bottom swift flowing clear water creek feeding into the Big Manistee River and is home to native trout and salmon. We worked closely with the Michigan Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality to design and build a fully functional structure that esthetically fit the natural environment. Also the United States Department of Agriculture-Forest Service “North Country Trail”, a National Scenic Hiking Trail, used the existing bridge for their crossing over Pine Creek. The new structure was designed with a walkway area for pedestrian traffic. This project was successfully completed on budget and on time.

WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS – CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF FILER

The Charter Township of Filer was experiencing problems with low pressure in their water system. The existing water tower did not have enough elevation to provide minimum fire flows to the service area. The tower also did not have sufficient capacity for the required two days of storage capacity during daily use. Nordlund & Associates, Inc. analyzed the Township’s water distribution system using computer modeling software to identify the areas that were substandard and to propose solutions to improve the systems performance. In order to fund the project we submitted a project plan to the MDEQ Drinking Water Revolving Fund and secured a low interest loan for $1,490,000. The water system improvements included: a new 300,000 gallon water tower, repairs and painting of the old 200,000 gallon tower, well house improvements, installation of a modern instrumentation system and new water main to eliminate dead ends, improve circulation and provide adequate fire flows to the service area. This project was successfully completed within budget.
